Fashion & Beauty from South Africa

Just over a week ago, designer Claudette Gopi launched her new collection with a bang at The President Hotel in Cape Town.

Greeted with drinks and canapés on arrival, you could feel the excitement and Claudette did not disappoint. The show kicked off with a red hot number and an amazing special performance by Sketchy Bongo.

From flirty fun dresses, stylish work wear and sultry swim wear, the collection really had something for every woman. I loved the different colours and patterns Claudette played with, she introduced an eastern element into her collection and these pieces were a modern take on the traditional Indian garments which really stood out on the runway.

Claudette has taken her range digital, where customers can purchase designs online and have them delivered straight to your door. The online stores launches on Monday, the 5th of June.

Well done Claudette, we can't wait to see what's next.

Check out some of the highlights:

The opening number was a fun fringe dress.
My personal favourite.

The model's looked flawless thanks to Smash Box.

Claudette infused eastern elements in her collection, the result was stunning.

Judith Altier

Although this collection was rather short with only 10 looks I enjoyed the consistency in Judith’s experimentation with tulle, construction and abstract geometric forms. Judith Altier has always impressed us with her exuberant use of textiles breaking away from the mediocre norm of using a fabric because that’s what clothing is made from and rather considering the essence of the fabric and the consequences on the design. The fabrics themselves were all a mesh of whites, blacks and greys and this colourless palette is the most prevalent characteristic of minimalism and while I have the strong urge to say that the collection was nothing more, the complex structures and in descript silhouettes forcefully disagree. While some silhouettes were rather rigid while others were gentle as they cascaded down the body reminiscing a waterfall, almost as if the garment was a part of the woman and it was dripping from her in the gentlest way but never actually leaving her body. Viva my favourite look A.k.a #10.
Rich Mnisi is a fairly new name to the SA Fashion Week runway but after 5 looks in one collection its clear why in his 3rd year he’s already been in the pages of ELLE, Dazed, VOGUE Italia, L’official and many more. It’s clear that Mnisi’s strength is in simplicity with each look pulling an emphasis on un-streamlined sleeves and tied waistlines. Mnisi mixes classic European form with elements of locality, in many pieces it’s through colour, using rich earthy mustard yellow and copper red a subtle sense of Africa is felt in a way that only Mnisi can urge.

Edda Gimnes is a Swedish designer whose style was never before seen on a South African runway. While mixed emotions ran wild in the audience as holistic forms with cartoonish scribbles glided down the runway, I sat in awe witnessing my very own emotions become warmongers and rage against each other. On the one hand my inner child was delighted by the brevity in the print but my outer adult couldn’t help but question the solace of every element in each garment. I believe the silhouettes were particularly simple so as not to distract from the illustration. It’s as if the illustration was intended to create form and remove the natural intention of 3D and rather impose 2D. Regardless of how we feel about this collection it’s safe to say this is a fine example of how fashion can be as much an art as it is a commercial product- not that there’s anything safe about this collection, cue my favourite look, #11.

Hi babes!

So we've recently attended the L'Oréal Professionnel hair roadshow:

It was such an experience!

From the latest colour trends to the most exciting new hair styles this show had it all, not to mention world renowned hair artist Christophe Gallilet.

His work is simply intriguing to watch. While he may not speak the best of English, his hands certainly do the talking captivating the audience one scissor cut at a time.

The show featured the trendiest hair colours ranging from our 2016 faves:

Pastels to greys to rose gold

It's so evident that hair colour is now mirroring makeup.

The hottest new 2017 fall trends include "Foilyage" and "Nudebeige".

The styling of hair for this season is definitely moving away from that straight sleek look and towards that loose natural wavy look aka: "French girl hair" as Christophe puts it.

It's official 2017 will be the year of the brunette. French browns are going to be huge this year. The french brown colour palette is all about using multiple tones of colour within the brown shade to create a beautiful soft satiny finish that looks born-this-way, but better. Professionnel's new Brunette Bar can help you decide which look is right for you.

One of coolest features on the official L'Oréal Professionnel website is that you can locate a L'Oréal salon nearest to you for your convenience. You can also see every stylist in a particular salon and view all their previous work, now that is super sweet.

We've also met some amazing local talent from Durban.
@stylistbyvicks is one of them, his salon is situated in the chatsworth area and is definitely worth the trip.
He's pretty much booked all the time but if you can wait for an appointment he won't disappoint. He's quite innovative when it comes to colour and definitely adds his personal touch to the overall look. In my opinion he is a colour genius and has a passion and flare that can make any women look and feel like a millionaire bucks.

Have a look at some his bomb work:

@tessacooper1 is another stylist we met, she's situated in the westville area and is super good with all types of styling from everyday to bridal Tessa can do it all not to mention the fact that she can lay the most natural looking extensions. She creates beautiful looks with all lengths of hair and any texture. You won't go wrong by booking with her for any occasion.
Here's some of her stunning creations:

Be sure to follow these stylists for more amazing looks!

Thanks to L'Oréal Professionnel SA for having us it was such a blast, we really enjoyed the show and learning new techniques and ways to style hair. We also loved meeting our local talents.

Hope you beauts love this post and rock the new 2017 trends, bye bye bright hair, hello french girl bed head!!!

Welcome to our first feature of 2017!

When I came across Tamlyn's Instagram account, I found myself scrolling through her feed and wanting to know more about her. I couldn't wait to get the inside scoop on her style.

Firstly, a little background on Tamlyn, she is a model with DMH agency and is also studying towards a Bcom Degree in fashion at the London International School of Fashion in Randburg.

Jacket: Factorie
Top: YDE
Jeans: Ronanld Sassoon

Here is what she had to say….

Tell us about yourself
Well I have a passion for fashion, I am a foodie at heart but by looking at me you could never tell. In my spare time I do a lot of shopping, sometimes it can get a bit extreme, but I’m working on my spending.

Describe your style

Well, it differs from day-to-day depending on my mood, I guess. It has a lot to do with what I see around. It’s definitely influenced by the Kardashian/Jenner girls.

Jacket: Edgars
Top: Sportscene
Shoes: Puma

Which fashion designers and fashion bloggers do you admire?

A fashion designer that I admire is not a typical option, it's Kanye West, I would say he is the biggest influence not only on my style but in my life as a whole, people constantly say that I have a "Kanye attitude" or "Kanye mentality", but in the end it all comes down to self-love.
With winter approaching, what’s your must-have item for the winter season?
My must have for winter has to be a long pair of black boots, preferably thigh highs.

#SAFWSLAY Tamlyn (Right) & Okebisgene (Left)
Jacket: Sissy Boy
Jeans: River Island
Boots: Cotton On

The one item you think completes a look?

The one item, I think that completes a look, has got to be confidence. With the way you carry yourself you could pull anything off.
Favourite places to shop and why?
My favourite places to shop: Top shop: they have stuff that one sometimes would not find in other stores. River Island: their jeans for the main reason because they are the perfect fit for my figure. More recently, H&M, because they have I would call it, a lot of clothing that are "Kanye colours". Also Mr Price most recently.

Top: Forever 21
Shorts: Factorie
Sock: Adidas
Shoes: Vans

Your favourite beauty/make up product you can’t live without?
The one beauty product I cannot live without has got to be my foundation. Which from Estee Lauder.
Favourite lipstick colour?
My favourite lipstick has got to be the MAC’s Whirl.

The one beauty trend you are loving right now?

One beauty trending I love at the moment, eyebrows, definitely eyebrows My fave brow products include Essence's Brow Kit and for an illuminator, the ABH Sun Kissed Glow kit, as well as the Urban Decay Illuminated Trio.

Top: Factorie
Jeans : Factorie

What’s in your everyday make up bag?
My make-up bag consists of firstly an eyebrow kit, foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, illuminator, contour kit, bronzer and lipstick and liner.

Your insta feed is on point, what's your number one tip for taking an OOTD picture.

For the ideal Instagram photo, my key elements are good lighting and location; I pay a lot of attention to my location and background.

H&M calls for a global movement to collect used clothes with its new “BRING IT” campaign.

H&M has kicked off the "Bring It" garment collecting campaign in all South African stores.

This campaign will run till the end of the week and customers are encouraged to bring any of their unwanted textiles (from any brand and in any condition) to any H&M store to be recycled.

In return, for every grocery size bag of unwanted items brought to our stores, customers will receive a 15% discount voucher to spend on their next H&M item of choice.

H&M first launched its worldwide Garment Collecting initiative in 2013 and has since then collected over 40,000 tonnes of clothing. Customers can bring any unwanted garments and textiles, from any brand and in any condition, to any H&M store, all year around.  The goal is to increase the number of garments collected, every year, so that we reach a total collected volume of 25,000 tonnes per year by 2020.

A brand-new film directed by Crystal Moselle will kick-off the next Garment Collecting campaign, Bring It, which is available on http://www.hm.com/za/. The campaign raises awareness on the importance of garment recycling. H&M wants to close the loop on fashion by giving customers an easy solution to hand in unwanted garments so they can be reused or recycled through H&M’s garment collecting initiative. By doing so, less garments go to landfill. The Bring It film tells the journey that unwanted garments go on after they have been collected in store. Through inspiring stories the film illustrates how the lifespan of a garment can be increased to keep it in the loop for as long as possible.

To provide fashion and quality at the best price in a sustainable way, H&M’s ambition is to work towards a change in the way fashion is made and enjoyed today. Closing the loop is a central commitment of H&M’s work towards a sustainable fashion future. The aim is to create a closed loop for textiles, so that unwanted clothes can be reused and recycled to create fresh textile fibers for new products. In turn, this will help to save natural resources and ensure that zero garments go to landfill.

For more information on Garment Collecting and Close the Loop, please visit http://about.hm.com/en/sustainability/get-involved/recycle-your-clothes.html
