The Glam Diaries: Chapter ll

I hope you babes all loved chapter l of the Glam Diaries. (Click here to read it)

This is chapter ll: How to choose the perfect cocktail dress for any event.

Cocktail dresses are one of my absolute favourite types of dresses, the styles themselves, the occasions in which one might find yourself donning a cocktail dress can vary in many ways.

As we all know, a cocktail dress is the go-to garment for a variety of social events. From work parties to wedding receptions, women need cocktail dresses for both formal and semi-formal events. However shopping for one may be frustrating if one has no starting point or frame of reference.

Some may tend towards the classic dress that they've always worn and others may follow trends blindly. Neither of these are ideal.

This guide aims to show you how to look on point, in your personal style that suits ones body, while aims for the greatest versatility in a cocktail dress.

1. Choose a dress that suits your booty:
Think of the parts of your body you want to highlight, and in contrast to that the parts you don't. So you can choose different necklines, different waists, different fits etc.
Your dress needs to flatter your body type well. Always consider that the dress needs to emphasize your best features and not your flaws.

An added bonus of wearing a dress that suits you is that it gives you a confidence boost.

2. The material is key to looking flawlessly elegant.

Material is a factor you should think of in terms of location, date and event.
For example, for events that take place in summer I'd recommend satin, linen or cotton while in winter you can opt for wool or brocades.

3. Never drop your personal style!
There are sun dresses, sleeveless, strapless or, more sophisticated dresses with long or three quarter sleeves, there are many options to choose from which will reflect your personal taste as well as personality. Always bare in mind the event that your attending so you won't look overdressed or underdressed.

4. Last but not least "wear it and don't let it wear you"
While crazy colours and prints routinely make a comeback, these trends should not persuade a women to wear these patterns or colours that simply do not match her skin tone or hair colour. Not only is it important to look at skin tone and hair colour when choosing the perfect dress, also take into consideration height and figure.

Petite women in particular can be overwhelmed by loud print or pattern. Solid colours are a safer bet, but make sure that its complementary. Ofcourse a screaming pink cocktail dress won't look right on everyone but neither will boring brown. Slim women with dark hair can look bony in dark colours. Finding colours that is complementary to ones skin tone is an art in itself.

Those who try to mimic a trend without actually liking the look generally end up looking like the clothes are wearing them.

NB: The most important rule is to feel comfortable with what you're wearing and feel confident while wearing it.
