Talia Hamid

We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Talia Hamid. Talia is a part time photographer from Durban. When we first stumbled across her Instagram account, we were so impressed by the quality of her images and the overall creatively. We messaged her instantly! Talia was also keen to work with us and so the Monochromatic Chic series was born.

We love featuring stylish South Africans, so we thought why not feature a local creative. This piece is dedicated to learning more about Talia and her creative process.

First a little background information on Talia, She is currently a second year BSC student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, with majors in both biochemistry and microbiology. Her interest in photography began when she purchased her first camera about six years ago. She started snapping pictures of nearly everything she laid her eyes on and these days, she rarely leaves home without her camera. Her current camera is the Cannon 1100D.

Photography has allowed me to capture the simple as well as extraordinary moments in life in my own unique way. I love the fact that in looking at a picture, it has the ability to bring out an emotion/feeling by telling us different stories depending on how the viewer interprets it.
-Talia on her love for photography

Talia enjoys capturing almost anything but her favourite types of images to shoot are those that include architecture and scenery. She loves shooting at locations with an old-fashioned, rustic feel to it, such as some of the neglected and rundown buildings at the famous Point Road in Durban. She also enjoys minimal locations like the beach front and waterfront, which was the location of our blogger Christelle's photo shoot.

When deciding on concepts for her photo shoots, Talia makes use of characteristics like simplicity, geometric patterns and textures, as well as the use of strong shadows. She achieves this by incorporating modern as well as old architecture in her shoots and using natural lighting of the day, during the early morning or at sunset.

When coming up with the concept for the Monochromatic shoot, both Talia and Christelle wanted a minimalistic look, Talia already had the perfect locations in mind and the look of the shoot was phenomenal.

Christelle is definitely a natural when it comes to the camera! And has a great eye for style. She is so down-to-earth and great to work with. When it came to being creative with different poses, she was keen on doing it all. We had tons of fun and a good laugh every now and then.

One of Talia's favourite images from our collab

Talia looks up to photographer and blogger, Margaret Zhang and admires the works of Alice Gao. She hopes to one day work with Valerie Jardin, who is an amazing photographer that focuses on minimal aspects, textures, and symmetry. Talia admires how she captures street and urban landscapes, and thinks her black and white photography is brilliant.

Her dream destination to both visit and photograph would have to be Santorini, Greece. Almost everything about this destination inspires Talia, from the intense-blue Mediterranean Sea to its white walled homes and burganvilla flowers. We agree, it's definitely a dream destination

If you take a peek at Talia's Instagram, it's what we basic people would call goals so we had to ask her about it. There's obviously a great deal of effort and creativity that goes into getting her feed looking so incredibly stunning. She admits it look her a while to get her Instagram feed looking the way it is. She tries to select pictures to post that will produce a consistent and cohesive layout when placed together, but she also believe its great to have abit of everything in one's feed to keep it exciting. Pictures of coffee, scenery and flatlays are her absolute go to's in helping to create this look.

In addition to her photography skills, her sense of style is also pretty great. So, we asked her about her favourite places to shop as well as her favourite beauty products. She regards Cotton On, Factorie, Woolworths and Refinery as her go fashion stores. After all, the offer the latest trends at affordable prices. Her favorite beauty products would definitely be a good lighlighter and bronzer, like the NYX highlighting powder, and Benefit's cosmetics Hoola bronzer. She is also crazy about Palladio's velvet matte range of lipsticks.

In terms of the future,Talia hopes to create an extensive portfolio for becoming a freelance photographer. She hopes to have the freedom to work on her own and would like to focus on fashion and landscape photography. She would love to do photo-styles from portraits to abstracts for clients ranging from magazines, clothing-store catalogues, and fashion bloggers.

A few images from Talia's portfolio

If she's not behind a camera, Talia enjoys spending the rest of her free time cooking or reading books and magazines. We have to admire Talia and her ability to pursue not only her degree but her passion in photography.

It was a honour to both work with Talia and to write a feature on this creative. She is definitely one to watch on the photography scene and we have a feeling we will be seeing much more of her work in the future. We can't wait to see those pictures from Greece!
